Leadership

Being able to lead a group of people and have them depend upon you is one of my favorite things in the whole world. I love being able to help people and learn with them and then guide them on the right path. In high school, I held many positions.

In my sophomore year, I held a position on the leadership committee within the color guard program, I was the production and music manager for Rock Hill Radio (RHR), and lastly, I was the co-president of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). In my junior and senior years, I held the positions of Program Director of RHR, Co-Editor in chief of Blue Hawk Yearbook, and president of the GSA.

This is how I lead...

My Leading Philosophy

I believe that a good leader leads by example and creates an environment for their staff where they know that they are always supported and have someone to turn to. With that being said I always try to make it so that my staff knows that they can always come to me with any problem. Whether that be involved in our particular field of study or just life, I will be here to support and build them up and be judgment free always. I hold people accountable but also have patience and compassion and hope that all who have been on my staff can think of me not only as their leader but also as a friend. At the end of the day, I want to help them grow as journalists and as humans.

“Zoey makes things that seem impossible seem reachable. She listens to everyone without a doubt. She doesnt want anyone to fall behind; which follows her incredible mindset. She always wants to make the people around her better for their future and teaches them skills everyday. She impacts our staff by showing us what to do and making our work place a good enviroment."

“Nobody can do the job better than she can, she is always there for all staffers. She is such a great role model, and has this quauality of listening to everyone that most don't have. Having this willingness to listen takes a lot of pacience and thats what makes her a great editor.”

1. Progress Check in's

As the managing editor for the yearbook part of my job is trying to help staff members manage their time correctly and meet deadlines. In order to do that I like to send progress check in's, I'll screenshot whatever it is that they are working on and I'll then message them on Google Chat and see how I can help them more effectively. This at times can be my favorite or the part I hate the most about my job depending on the situation of certain tasks my staff is completing.

2. Reminders

I try and always send reminders to my staff about things that are coming up because I know they are involved in a lot and I never want them to forget things. I will send reminders about all kinds of things but I always post our coverage calendars at the beginning of the week to make sure everyone remembers what they signed up for.

3. Shout Out's

One of my favorite things about being on the yearbook is the community that we have built, that being said We make sure to always celebrate members' accomplishments in other areas.

4.  Organization

I try and help to keep everything I possibly can as organized as possible especially when it comes to information for the yearbook. This is the ladder that I built for our book this year and honestly, it is one of my favorite things I have ever made. This tracks what is on every single page of our yearbook but It is also coded so that everything on the first tab copies to the second for further page planning.
