Broadcast

Broadcast from the video standpoint is actually something I am not super familiar with. Other than taking my basic level principles of media class freshmen year I've never even picked up a video camera. But this year I've pushed myself to learn and it's been really fun getting to experience a new form of media. I hope to in the future be able to learn more and have a more diverse video portfolio. With that being said I am extremely familiar with audio broadcasting, I have been working on my school's student-run radio station for 3 years and it is one of my favorite courses I have ever taken!

This is what I call broadcasting...

Podcasting

Radio

Script Sample:

In 2021 I decided with my staff that I wanted to host a weekly morning show. After the trials and tribulations to get it perfect, we started having a weekly show that has won a Marcom Gold Status award and helps to inform our school every Wednesday. The morning show consists of four main segments, weather, campus news, music industry news, and sponsorship messages. This has been something that I look forward to every week and have poured endless amounts of dedication and work into.

First Impressions is the podcast I started in my Radio production class senior year. In it, we give raw reactions to new music. Although I do not have a majority hosting part in this production it is completely edited and written by me. This is something that we hope to continue this year but are still working out the kinks of to make sure it's perfect.

Flip The Script is a podcast that goes beyond what is just happening in a film and talks about the stories behind the content and actors in the film. I started this as well in my Radio Production class during Junior year and it is something that I have loved doing. The scripts and editing for flip the script are done completely by me with the assistance of RJ Ruzicka in editing to help find music for the background.

Beyond the classics is a movie-related podcast that I started during my sophomore year. It was my very first audio-related project ever and it was when I fell in love with the audio digital world. It's definitely not great and I have grown and learned a lot since creating it but it has been one of my favorite publications I ever produced because it allowed me to explore the field and helped to shape a good portion of the knowledge that I have now. Beyond the Classics is a solo hosted podcasted created and edited completely by me.

This is Rock Hill Radio

It all starts here:

It starts with a request. Rock Hill Radio is all about being the station for our students it's even in our tagline, Rock Hill Radio only the best tracks picked by you. So the process starts there Rock Hill High School students, staff members, and community members suggest songs from there we check them to make sure they are school appropriate and that we don't already have them on the station. Then because we are a publication we pay for all of the rights to our songs so that we follow all copyright laws and regulations.

After we purchase songs on our Itunes account we then have to use Adobe Audition and make all song levels match industry standards. After exporting our songs to our catalogs and then making sure that they have been updated in our database its time to schedule. We use a service called Music Master to schedule our radio programs. With it we have create multiple clocks and rules that work together so that our station can play music 24/7, that is from all different kinds of genres, have specialty programs, and is an award winning program.

We schedule each day and set our clocks depending on what type of program we are wanting to run. Our clocks tell Music Master what to schedule during every second of the day and help so that from a programmer's standpoint you can see exactly what categories are being used at what times. Our rules are set up to make sure that our station runs in good order. Our biggest rule is rest times, rest times are set so that when scheduling Music Master knows how long one type of song needs to wait before it plays that category again. This is crucial because if you have fewer songs in one category but try to play it with the same rigor as a category you have a larger library for then you will start to repeat the same song in a day which is definitely not good. We also have rules on the types of moods of songs so that for example a sad song wouldn't play right before a song that's really upbeat or energetic.

After everything has been programmed and gone through the Music Master system it is then exported and moved to the program Simian. Simian is what actually connects the audio file to the metadata and code that we just wrote in Music Master. This is what plays the station live and you can make changes from here at any point during the stream if you need to change the way something is playing on the station.

In collaboration with Simian, we use Ed Cast. Ed Cast is what created our online live stream that you see below and is what makes it so that you see the artwork and title while a song is playing. It is basically what transfers all of the RSS Feed and data from our data base to our online platform.

Rock Hill Radio is quite possibly the best decision I have ever made in my entire life. In this program I have built from the ground up I have grown so much as a leader and a human being and it is something that will always have a special place in my heart. This program which is continuing to grow every day makes my heart feel so whole. The above steps of production were created by me and are now being taught not only to our staff but used as an example to other staff's that come to tour our station.
